Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge

A destination of thousands of migrating waterfowl, shorebirds, and other water birds, the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge has 18,000 acres of protected land in the southern portion of the county, near Elk Grove and is one of a few urban refuges in the nation. Grasslands, vernal pools and diverse wildlife, and plant life make this a year round destination. The refuge provides the public with free daily access on Blue Heron Trails, docent guided hikes, guided paddle trips, bird-watching, special events, environmental education tours for school/civic groups, and waterfowl hunting.
